What assembly covers

Assembly is for anything that arrives flat, boxed or in pieces and has to be built before you can use it. The Pro works from the maker's instructions and the hardware in the box.

  • Furniture assembly suits a new bedroom set, a home office, a crib or a wall of storage shelving, whether it's one piece or a whole delivery.
  • Sports and fitness equipment assembly suits the heavy, awkward gear: a rowing machine, a squat rack, a backyard playset or a portable hoop.

What assembly doesn't cover

Some jobs that start in a box end up as a different kind of work:

  • Anything on a wall. Shelves, TVs and mirrors that hang go to mounting and hanging.
  • New wiring. If a machine's manual calls for a dedicated circuit, adding one is electrical work, and a new circuit needs a permit in Virginia (Uniform Statewide Building Code, as of September 2026).
  • Digging. An in-ground hoop or a playset set in concrete means digging, and Virginia requires anyone digging, even by hand, to contact Virginia 811 at least three working days first. It's free.

How to prepare

  • Put the boxes in the room where the item will stay. A built treadmill or wardrobe is much harder to move than its boxes.
  • Measure the space, and have the model number and manual ready.
  • Clear floor space around the work area, and put down a sheet or blanket if you're worried about scratches.
  • Decide what happens to the cardboard and packing foam. Ask whether the Pro can take it, or plan your recycling. A big load can go with junk removal and hauling.
  • Keep children and pets out of the room while parts and small hardware are spread out.

Frequently Asked Questions

Assembly follows the maker's instructions, so where you bought it usually matters less than what it is. Tell the Pro the brand and model number ahead of the visit so they know what they're building and which tools to bring.

Only if you want to check for missing or damaged parts first, which is worth doing for large pieces. Otherwise leave the parts in their boxes, in the room where the item will stand. If something is missing, contact the seller before the visit rather than on the day.

Ask for it when you book. Tall dressers, bookcases and wardrobes usually ship with an anti-tip kit meant to fasten them to the wall, and the Pro will want to know what your walls are made of.

Check the manual: makers list the footprint and the clear space needed behind and beside the machine, and some list a minimum ceiling height. Measure doorways and stairs too, in case the machine has to move after it's built.
