What photography and videography covers
- A wedding, a rehearsal dinner, a milestone birthday or a company holiday party: event and wedding photography
- Holiday-card photos, a new baby, senior portraits or an updated LinkedIn headshot: portrait and family photography
- Listing photos before your home goes on the market, a team page, or a restaurant's menu: real estate and business photography
- A short brand film, a recorded interview or a month of clips for social media: video and content creation
Agree on the details first
A shoot goes best when both sides know what to expect, so write it down. Before the day, agree with the Pro on:
- Coverage: where they'll be, from when to when, and which moments matter most.
- What you'll receive: edited photos, a finished video or raw footage, in what format, and by when.
- Use: where you plan to use the images, whether that's a family album, a property listing or paid ads.
- Weather: a backup plan or an indoor spot for anything outdoors.
How to prepare
- Events: share a timeline with addresses, a list of must-have shots and family groupings, and one person who knows everyone and can round people up.
- Portraits: choose a location and a time of day with the Pro. The light in the early morning or the hour before sunset is softer than the midday sun.
- Real estate: declutter every room, open blinds, turn on every light, hide bins and move cars out of the driveway. Mow the lawn a day or two before.
- Business and video: send talking points or a script, pick a quiet room, and tell staff who will be on camera.
Frequently Asked Questions
As soon as your date and venue are set. A photographer can cover only one event at a time, so the earlier you ask, the more choice you have.
Settle it in writing before the shoot. Ask what you may do with the images, such as print them, post them or use them in ads, and whether the Pro may show them in their own portfolio.
Coordinate rather than match: pick two or three colors that go together, and avoid large logos and busy patterns. Bring a spare outfit for small children, and anything that creases on a hanger.
Some parks, gardens and historic sites require a permit or a fee for professional shoots, and the rules differ from site to site. Check the site's website or call ahead, and ask the Pro whether they have shot there before.
