Which moving service do you need?
It depends on who brings the truck and how much of the work you want to hand over.
- You've rented a truck or a portable container and need people to load and unload it: moving help and labor.
- You want the truck included as well as the crew: local movers with a truck.
- You want help boxing up or settling in, with or without movers: packing and unpacking.
- Some of it isn't coming with you: junk removal and hauling. Book it before moving day, so the movers only handle what's going.
- It's one or two items, not a move: local delivery.
Moving in or out of an apartment building
Talk to the building's management office before you book. Ask whether the elevator needs reserving, which hours moves are allowed and where the truck can load. If the building asks movers for a certificate of insurance, request one from the Pro well ahead of the day; it comes from the Pro's own insurer.
How to prepare
- Make a list of large and heavy items, and anything fragile or valuable, such as a piano, a glass tabletop or artwork.
- Tell the Pro about stairs, elevators and how far the truck will park from your door, at both ends of the move.
- Label boxes by room at the new place, and keep a path clear through each home.
- Empty drawers of anything loose or breakable, and take down wall-mounted items.
- Defrost and dry the fridge if it's moving, and arrange for the washer and dryer to be disconnected beforehand. A gas dryer's connection is gas work, which Virginia licenses separately.
Once the truck has gone, book a move-out clean for the old place before you hand back the keys.
Frequently Asked Questions
Agree on it before moving day. Bed frames, dining tables and large desks often have to come apart to fit through doors, and flat-pack furniture can be rebuilt at the new place with furniture assembly.
Keep documents, medicines, jewelry, keys, chargers and anything irreplaceable with you, plus a bag with what you'll need for the first night. Label these clearly so they don't get loaded by mistake.
That's what local delivery is for: pickup from a store or a private seller, and delivery to your door. Give the Pro the item's size and weight, and say whether it has to go up stairs or through a narrow doorway.
Before moving day, ask the Pro what insurance they carry and how they handle damage, and get the answer in writing. Pros are independent providers who represent their own insurance, and One Stop Pros doesn't certify it; your homeowner's or renter's policy may also help.
